Through the works of 18th-century playwright Carlo Goldoni, and 19th-century composer Giuseppe Verdi, Professor Franca Barricelli will explore how the “Myth of Venice” — the facts and fictions of the blurry origins and spectacular longevity of the “Serenissima” — sustained the notion of Venetian exceptionalism after its collapse to Napoleonic troops.
Following her inspired lecture about Italian painter Artemisia Gentileschi last year, Professor Barricelli returns from Massacchussets to examine Venetian mythology through the lens of theatrical and musical masterpieces.
The presentation will be followed by a Q&A and a Venice-inspired aperitivo.
