Synopsis: The novel is set in the countryside of Southern Italy in the 1970s, where Michele, a nine-year-old boy, comes across a secret so terrible that he can’t even tell it.
The themes of this book involve adolescence, friendship, the relationship between the world of adults and children, and family and evil. The novel won the Viareggio Prize for fiction and in 2003 the director Gabriele Salvatores made a film about it.
